Climate Ready Lynn | Lynn, MA - 2024
The City of Lynn faces significant challenges due to climate change, evidenced by severe weather events like the August 2018 storm, which brought heavy rainfall and flooding. With four miles of coastline, Lynn is highly vulnerable to rising sea levels, particularly during high tides, and warming temperatures have already increased by 2°F since 1970. By 2050, temperatures could rise by another 3-6°F, impacting the health of its residents, especially vulnerable populations. Equitable strategies are necessary to address environmental justice issues, as climate impacts disproportionately affect low-income communities and communities of color. The city's natural systems, including its coastline and urban rivers, are at risk, and these challenges are compounded by the city's classification as a Massachusetts Gateway City, which has faced economic decline. The Lynn Local Hazard Mitigation Planning Team is actively working to update strategies to mitigate these risks and improve resilience, in compliance with federal requirements for hazard mitigation planning.
